There are different kinds of abuse. The abuser can be someone closely connected with the victim or a total stranger and it may occur at any point in the victim’s life.
Abuse is painful, both emotionally and at times physically. For the victim, it can have deeply felt repercussions. The victim may feel ashamed and isolated, leading to difficulties in relating to others or forming close and trusting relationships.
Feelings that are the product of abuse cannot only be traumatic, painful and difficult to bear, but also very deeply felt and disturbing. So disturbing that our psychological integrity is lost with the painful feelings becoming so unbearable, that we disengage from reality for a period.
